President Tinubu Reassures U.S. of Nigeria’s Determination to Defeat Terrorism

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to eradicating terrorism and strengthening national security in Nigeria. The President made this declaration at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, emphasizing that his government remains steadfast in working with international partners, particularly the United States, to secure lasting peace and stability in the country.

Tinubu’s assurance came in response to growing international concerns, including remarks reportedly made by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the persistent security challenges facing Nigeria. Addressing the issue head-on, Tinubu stressed that his government is taking concrete steps to confront terrorism, strengthen intelligence gathering, and restore confidence in Nigeria’s internal security framework.

Renewed Cooperation Between Nigeria and the United States

The President noted that Nigeria and the United States share a long history of cooperation in the areas of defense, intelligence sharing, and counterterrorism. According to him, these partnerships are crucial in tackling extremist threats that have plagued parts of Nigeria for over a decade.

“Our partnership with the United States is built on mutual trust and respect,” Tinubu said. “Nigeria is working closely with global allies to eliminate terrorism and violent extremism from our borders. The safety of our citizens and the stability of our nation remain paramount.”

He reaffirmed that Nigeria’s renewed diplomatic engagement with the international community forms a vital part of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to rebuild national unity, drive economic recovery, and ensure security for all Nigerians.

Cabinet Changes and Focus on Good Governance

Tinubu made his statement shortly after swearing in two newly appointed ministers Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh from Enugu State and Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro from Plateau State.

Dr. Udeh, a respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Enugu State Attorney General, was appointed to replace Uche Nnaji, who resigned following a certificate controversy. Dr. Doro, on the other hand, succeeds Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who now serves as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

These appointments, according to the President, reflect his administration’s commitment to competence, accountability, and transparency. Tinubu emphasized that his cabinet reshuffles are designed to enhance performance and ensure that ministries operate effectively in delivering national priorities.

Economic Growth and Renewed Investor Confidence

During the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held prior to the swearing-in ceremony, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, announced that Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 4.23 percent in the second quarter of 2025 the highest growth rate recorded in nearly a decade outside the post-COVID-19 recovery period.

President Tinubu hailed the growth as a sign of economic resilience and renewed investor confidence. He highlighted the recent $2.3 billion bond oversubscription as further evidence that global investors are regaining trust in Nigeria’s economic reforms.

“The task ahead is immense,” Tinubu stated. “But our focus is clear we are rebuilding confidence in Nigeria’s economy, restoring peace in our communities, and ensuring that prosperity reaches every citizen.”

The President reiterated his administration’s resolve to reduce inflation, boost job creation, and foster a conducive environment for foreign investment. He added that the government’s recent fiscal reforms and security strategies are interconnected, as peace and stability remain vital foundations for sustainable development.

Commitment to National Unity and Security

Tinubu’s remarks underscored the centrality of national unity in his fight against terrorism. He noted that extremists exploit ethnic and religious divides to weaken Nigeria’s social fabric, and called for collective national resilience.

“We must rise together as one people, united by a shared destiny,” he said. “Our enemies seek to divide us, but our strength lies in our unity. We will defeat terrorism and restore lasting peace to every region of our nation.”

Security analysts view the President’s renewed focus on diplomacy and intelligence collaboration as a positive shift from purely military responses to a more comprehensive strategy. This includes addressing root causes such as poverty, youth unemployment, and community marginalization factors often exploited by terror groups.

Tributes and Reflections

The Federal Executive Council meeting also observed a minute of silence in honour of two notable Nigerians Senator Solomon Ewuga, a former Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and General Mohammed Abdullahi, a former military governor and founding Director-General of the Nigerian Security Organization (NSO).

Tinubu described their contributions as “exemplary and patriotic,” emphasizing that their legacy of service would inspire the nation’s ongoing security and governance reforms.

Conclusion: A Renewed Commitment to Peace and Progress

President Tinubu’s renewed pledge to defeat terrorism represents a broader message of hope and determination to both Nigerians and international partners. By linking national security with economic reform and diplomatic engagement, his administration aims to reposition Nigeria as a stable and prosperous nation in the global community.

As Nigeria continues to navigate complex security and economic challenges, Tinubu’s call for unity, resilience, and global cooperation stands as a reminder that the path to peace and progress requires both domestic responsibility and international solidarity.
